Welcome to the Mitochondrial Metabolism and Bioenergetics Laboratory! Our group studies how energy metabolism and metabolic flexibility – the ability to switch between sugar, amino acid, and fatty acid oxidation in response to biological cues – can control cell function and fate. Ultimately, we aim to discover novel regulatory points of metabolism and develop mitochondrial proteins and pathways as therapeutic drug targets.

We congratulate Ajit for being awarded the 2023 Agilent Early Career Professor Award. Each year Agilent selects one professor who they believe demonstrates outstanding potential for future research, significant original research contributions enabling technologies of importance to Agilent and the world, and aligns with the focus topic. Congrats to Neira, UCLA Class of 2023 Graduate!

We wish a huge congratulations to Neira, an undergraduate researcher in the lab who just graduated from UCLA. Neira graduated Summa Cum Laude with a B.S. in Molecular, Cell and Developmental Biology and a minor in Mathematical Biology. She will be greatly missed, but we are excited to see all she accomplishes in this next chapter!
